June 19, 2010, at the union hall of UAW Local 677, 21union members from our Local 677 a 3 hour seminar, conducted by Barbara Lichtman of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. Among the topics covered by Ms Lichtman were Steward’s and Management Rights, the Weingarten Rights, Fair Representation, Past Practice, Grievance Procedure and much more. Many of those attending the seminar have participated in some of the procedures others have not. Those new to the grievance procedure, learned much about how things are done and the proper methods used. Ms. Lichtman explained, mediation is a step before arbitration and often result in matters being settled eliminating the need to go to arbitration. She also explained, mediation is less costly than arbitration. Arbitration was also discussed. There were actual situations discussed, as well as possible one or two hypothetical scenarios. Everyone participated in these discussions, and expressed their views on why a given situation would be considered as a grievance, or not, as well as how a ruling might be decided. This was the third of many seminars and education opportunities to be offered by UAW Local 677. Watch your UAW bulletin boards and this newsletter for future offerings. Expect another with International Rep Jack Callahan in August. Mary Saveri Education Chairperson UAW Local 677 |
